Bakmi Godog and Goreng is one of the distinctive culture of Indonesian dishes made with chicken ingredients – noodles – vegetable. Rumah Sleman is a house that would preserve Javanese culture. Gunungan
It is offering stuffs made of food, fruits, vegetables and other things shaped as a mountain. Mount means Gunung in Javanese.
Garebeg
Garebeg is a parade of the palace Guard.
the word is taken from Javanese term means noisy. The voice come from the activity of visitors, the footsteps of the
palace’s soliders on the procession guarding the gunungan moving from the palace to the courtyard of the grand mosque; the
noise is strengthen by the exploding of the rifles of the palace’s soldiers in the middle of the procession.
Garebeg ceremony are always held on :
The 12 Th of Maulud, the third month of the Javanese calender.
The 1 St of Syawal, the tenth month of the Javanese calender.
the 10 th of besar, the last month of the Javanese calender.

Ketoprak
Javanese traditional folk drama played by a cast of artists accomapanied by the sound of gamelan archestra and the voice of
professional lady singer or warangggono. The Ketoprak plays episodes from the Indonesian rulers in the past.
Labuhan
An offering in the form of food, finger and toenail curring, locks of hair and discarded garments besides some new ones, of
the sultan of Yogyakarta which is thrown to the sea or mountain. As an offering presented to the Goddes of the sea.
Numplak wajik
Tumplak wajik is held two days before the Gerabeg ceremony.
It is the moment of the Wajik is turned over on theround wooden tray ( the base for the Gunungan ), people beat
simultaneuosly on rice mortars in rythmic and regular cadence is done on and on until the Gunungan  is completed. Wajik is
made of sticky rice cooked with sugar and coconut cream.
Wayang kulit/leather puppet shadow play
it is the most popular play among the Javanese, Containing stories based on two hinduist epics, the Mahabarata ( the Great
war ) and Ramayana ( the story of Rama). The play is performed by narrator and puppeteers at the same time directing the
entire performance accomomaiend by the gamelan archestra and one or more lady singers.
Suran Traditional (Mbah Demang )
A traditional ceremopny of takong water from a well at Guyangan village, Gamping, Sleman. A week before the ceremony takes
place there are some attractions and a burly night market from the time on the people start to take water from the well,
but officially the ceremony will be done at midnight coinciding with the first Suro ( Muharram)or the first day of Javanese
calendar.
Ramayana Ballet
This ramayana ballet is very unique andfamous. It is presented approximately by 250 professional dancers at the open air
theatre of Prambanan temple. The entire Ramayana epics is concised into 4 episodes. Each night 1 eoisode and presented from
07.30 09.30 pm. Also the full story.

Traditional ceremony
This is the ceremony of cleaning or bathing Sultan Palace’s heirlooms. On the firs day sacres lances and daggers are cleaned ( closed to the visitors ).On the second day other hairlooms are cleaned such as Dampar Kencong( golden couch), Sultan’s ignisias. Kraton’s holy
regalia such as a golden swan nammed Menjangan, At the same time at Rotowijayan two Kereta Kencana ( golden darriages ) named Kanjeng Nyai Jimat and Kyai Garuda Yeksa are bathed.

Waicak Ceremony
The religius processing is started from mendut temple located some 35 km northwest of Yogyakarta to the Borobudur temple.
Preceded by the holy fire, the Budha satue and aminiature stupa, followed by the Bikhus, clad in this yellow robes and
members of Budhist community bringing burning candles and budles of flowers with them. When the moon is at its fullest the
principal Holy waicak ceremony starts comprising the moment he reaced Budha Hood when meditating in the Uruvela forsest

This ceremony is held once a year in the Suro month consisting of the refiling 4 large bronze pitchers witch water.

Saparan Ceremony in Gamping
This ceremony is held in Ambarketawang village, Gamping some 5 kms west of Yogyakarta. It is performed by the community as a taken of gratitued for their welfare granted to them by God. In older times people in this village made their living by digging limestones from the hills, in which according to the geologists are over 50 millions year old and thus the oldest limestones hills in Indonesia. In those day through this ceremony they beg God for protection against and dangerous undertaking in one’s life.

Rabu pungkasan Ceremony
Every year water festival is held by the farmers wishing for abudant harvest and their soil stay fertile. This ceremony is held at the place where Opak river meets the Gadjah Wong river and ending at Permuni Cave. This cave is believed to be the place where Panembahan Senopati met the legendari Goddess of the sounth sea. ( Indian Ocean).There for this cave is considered sacred by the inhabitants of jejeran village, Wonokromo Pleret Bantul. The festivies last one week and culminates on the last wednsday ( Rabu Pungkasan) of the Sapar mont.
Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence
Prior to Independence Day people all over Indonesia are busy putting up banners and hoisting flags. A taptoo ceremony is held at the Gedung Agung groups opposite fort Vredeburg Museum.At midnight a comptemplation ceremony is held at the Heroes Cemetry to honor and commemorate the fallen heroes who gave their lives to their country.
Pilgrimage to Sendangsono
May and October also considered as a holy month to honor maria, Moyher of Jesus Christ. Thousands of the Roman Catholic community from all over Indonesia even from aboard make their pilgrimage to Sendangsono these months. Pilgrimage walk as far as 3.5 kms along the road starting from Bankaroya Kalurahan (village) office on the Sentolo – muntilan road to reach the Promasan Church.
Sekaten Ceremony
The people of Yogyakarta and its surroundings generaly believe that those who participate in the ceremonies commemorating the birth of Muhammad the prophed will be blessed a good life and granted youthfullness. On the first day from 08.00 pm.
Two melodioulsly tuned gamelan sets : Kyai Nogowilongo and Kyai Guntur Madu are played simultaneously in the Sultan Palace Ponconiti pavilion. at interval a sermon is given and verses of Holy Qur’an script are recitd.

Traditional Java

Javanese is the second most widely used language of the Indonesian archipelago, being spoken by some one hundres million people. It also has a rich literrary tradition, comprising not only written text but also forms of theatrical performance  notably the wayang  ( shadow puppetry), which preserves complex Hindu narratives from the pre-Islamic period. Twentieth century Javanese writers have used the forms of the novel, free verse and short story to develop a contemporary leterature notable for its vivid expression and realism.
This Javanese English Dictionary is the only reference source to provide a complete listing, with clear English translations and explanations, of all current terms used in modern Javanese. It covers the whole vocabulary needed both for everyday communication and in order to read published materials, and is a resource long needed by language scholars, students of Javanese history and society and visitors with an interest in the traditional culture of Java.
this dictionary is the result of a collaboration between an Australian scholar with a vast knoledge of the Javanese language, from the earliest 9th century sources to the present, and a native speaker, from the University of Indonesia who has contributed linguistic input and an insider’s familiarity with wayang and dance. Other native speakers from various regions of Java have also helped to increase the coverage of regional varieties spoken outside the cities of Yogyakarta and Surakarta.
An Australian scholar, Stuart Roson has been involved with Asian Studies for over 40 years. He spent many years teaching at the University of Leiden un the Netherlands, and is a member of the prestigious Royal Institude of Linguistics and Anthropology (Koninklijk Instuut voor Taal,Land,en Volkenkunde). Earlier in his career he worked in Yogyakarta as an assistant on the Old Javanese dictionary of P.J.Zoetmulder. He is now a resident of Melbourne, Australia, and until the of 2000 was head of the Indonesian programme at Monash University. His other interest include Theravada Buddhism, archaeolagy and classical Javanese music.
A native speaker of Javanese, Singgih Wibisono took leave from his position at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta to spend three years working as a Research Associate on the project leading ton he production of this dictionay. He has particular expert knowledge of traditional Javanese wayang and dance, and is now a member of the faculty of Performing Arts at the Istitut Kesenian, Jakarta.
